CHINA IN REVOLUTION: FROM MAO TO XI

从毛泽东思想对中国革命习近平

(Note: The large star on the Chinese flag, designed in 1949, symbolizes the Communist Party. The four smaller stars refer to each of the four classes of people according to Mao Zedong: peasants, workers, petite bourgeoisie, and patriotic capitalists.)

Course Description: After the China-Japan war (1931-1945), the Chinese fought a bloody civil war that culminated in a Communist victory in 1949. This eight week course will examine the ongoing nature of China's revolution through four generations of Communist Party leaders beginning with Mao Zedong and ending with the designated heir apparent in 2013, fifth generation leader, Xi Jinping. We will first briefly consider the long history of Imperial China, its cultural traditions, and its confrontations with the outside world. Then we will look carefully at the many changes that have taken place in the world's most populous country since 1949. We will also want to project where China is headed in the future, the challenges it faces, the needs it has, and the responsibilities it perceives it must assume as an economic and perhaps geopolitical superpower. The theme/focus for each class follows.

Class 1: Cultural Traditions

Class 2: Alien Influences and the Demise of Imperial China (1911)

Class 3: Looking for China's "Glue": Chinese Fighting Japanese and Chinese Fighting Chinese (1940s)

Class 4: "Liberation" and Mao's China (1950s)

Class 5: The Cultural Revolution (1960s)

Class 6: Late Cultural Revolution and then a Big Change (1970s)

Class 7: Post Mao China: The Four Modernizations: (Deng Xiaoping & Jiang Zimen-1978-2005)

Class 8: Post Deng China: The Emerging Superpower (4th generation: Hu Jintao) (2005-Present)
